Celebrate the 100^th anniversary of one of Canada’s greatest contributions to medical research with this seven-piece coin set marking the discovery of insulin.

This special collector keepsake includes two versions of the $2 Discovery of Insulin circulation coin: a selectively coloured piece and a non-coloured version. All seven of these 2021 circulation coins come ready to view and display in an informational collector card, with colourful visuals to help explain the importance of this Canadian medical breakthrough that changed the world.

Designed by Canadian artist Jesse Koreck, the reverse is double dated (“1921 2021”) to commemorate the 100^th anniversary of a Canadian medical innovation. The discovery of insulin at the University of Toronto is represented by a maple leaf and traditional symbols: an early insulin vial, an Erlenmeyer flask, a mortar and pestle. The inner core shows insulin in monomeric form, which is highlighted in blue on selectively coloured coins, while the depiction of the hormone at work in the bloodstream extends onto the outer ring. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Insulin was discovered in 1921 by Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip and John Macleod at the University of Toronto. For their work, Banting and Macleod were jointly awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; they chose to share the prize money with Best and Collip. In 1934, Banting was knighted, becoming Sir Frederick Banting. Today, millions of people with diabetes continue to be treated with this life-saving drug.
