About the Coronation and Royal Cypher

The coronation ceremony encompasses six key rituals: the rite of recognition, the swearing of the coronation oath, anointing with holy oil, investiture and crowning with St. Edward’s Crown, enthroning, and the homage.

British monarchs have used cyphers since the reign of Henry VIII. Queen Elizabeth II's favoured cypher featured a stylized representation of St. Edward’s Crown, the official coronation crown dating from the coronation of King Charles II in 1661. His Majesty The King’s Royal Cypher showcases a stylized Tudor Crown, the headpiece used by monarchs until the English Civil Wars (1642-1651) and featured in the royal cypher of His Majesty’s grandfather, King George VI.

About His Majesty King Charles III

His Majesty King Charles III, the reigning monarch of Canada, was born on November 14, 1948, at Buckingham Palace. His ascent to the throne occurred following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022. King Charles III holds the title of Sovereign not only over Canada but also over the United Kingdom and 13 other Commonwealth realms.

His journey as a royal began when he was formally invested as the Prince of Wales by Queen Elizabeth II on July 1, 1969. He followed a naval career, a path followed by his father, grandfather, and two great-grandfathers. Reverse: The Royal Cypher

The coin’s reverse design showcases the Royal Cypher of His Majesty King Charles III, featuring his regnal number “III” and the initials “C” and “R” for “Charles” and “Rex,” which is Latin for “King”. The stylized crown in the cypher represents the Tudor Crown, inspiring the four gemstone shapes and engraved pearls along the coin’s edge. The inscriptions “5 Dollars” and “Canada” appear at the bottom of the coin's reverse.
