About the issue

Every year, Canada Post issues Permanent™ stamps to mark Black History Month.

Canada Post has a long history of honouring Canadian recording artists from a variety of musical genres, including opera, country and jazz.

This is the first time that Canada Post is celebrating hip-hop and hip-hop MCs.

About Hip-Hop in Canada

When hip-hop arrived in Canada it took on a new identity, thanks in part to the trailblazing MCs who reimagined the genre and gave it a northern touch.

Maestro Fresh Wes propelled Canadian hip-hop into the mainstream with groundbreaking hits that set new industry milestones. Michie Mee combined rap with dancehall and reggae to create an iconic sound that captivated fans. Montréal-based group Muzion layered French, English and Haitian Creole into their music, injecting the ever-evolving genre with a fresh new vibe.

About the design

Inspired by the raw energy of early hip-hop, these stamps evoke the genre’s DIY spirit with an assembled aesthetic that reflects the era.

The titles are crafted using varied type sizes, echoing the rhythmic nature of hip-hop’s sound and culture while creating a bold visual identity.

Printed with fluorescent inks that glow under black light, metallic silver and black duotone portraits, and layered matte and gloss varnishes, these stamps evoke the bold, nostalgic aesthetics of the ’80s and ’90s.
